“…Christie's realisation of Charpentier's orchestration is decisive, while Hunt Lieberson's final confrontation with Padmore… is as striking a finale as any by Gluck or Berlioz.” (BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2009 *****)
Charpentier's Médée gets this writer's vote for the greatest opera of the entire French Baroque era. In their retelling of the Medea legend, Charpentier and his librettist Corneille combine all the grace, charm, and artifice typical of the French Baroque era with truly gripping drama. William Christie and Les Arts Florissants give a thrilling performance with a fabulous cast featuring stellar high tenor Mark Padmore and "La Divina" Lorraine Hunt (yes, she is the Maria Callas of 18th-century opera) in the role that made her a Baroque superstar. (Matthew Westphal)
"...Mark Padmore's silky high tenor is vocally ideal for Jason; and his partner in pseudo-innocence, Monique Zanetti as Creuse, wafts delicately over some of the opera's most lyrical moments...[Lorraine Hunt] finally meets a role she can sink her teeth into. As Medee, she rips into the rococo mise-en-scene set up by the artificial, obsequious tone of the prologue." (Opera News)
I'm beginning here to resurrect some of the works that "disappeared" from Avax or were "abandoned" from the original uploaders. There's not a real thought behind it, I'm just cleaning up my HDs and following the wind. What I downloaded long ago is flowing back. All credits go to the first uploader. Enjoy...
