Vivaldi: Concertos for the Emperor [Manze]

Andrew Manze revisits Vivaldi with this compendium of six concertos written for Charles VI. It's an unusual collection: like the more famous Op. 9 concertos nicknamed "La Cetra", these six, taken from a larger set of 12 concertos, bear the same nickname. Never published (and offered here in reconstructed form), these works are full of strange harmonies and unsettling melodies. As Manze muses in his liner notes, it's quite possible that these concertos simply may have been too daring for publication. (Even today, these concertos might well prick the ears of those looking for gentle Baroque background music.)
Manze's scholarship and careful study are as fine as ever, leading to some surprising choices. RV 271, for example, is nicknamed "L'Amoroso", so Manze & Co. have dropped the harpsichord continuo in favor of the "lover's instrument", the baroque guitar. But the great fun here is to be found in the playing; Manze and the English Concert are firebrands who simply torch these scores, and this is one thrilling recording.
Some listeners might not like these players' rawness and grit, which is evident from the very first measures of the opening Concerto No. 2. Manze improvises cadenzas for three of these concertos that are as wild--and as far from prim-and-proper Baroque-isms--as one could imagine. The fast movements are truly breathtaking, building to a heart-stopping climax in the C minor concerto's final movement. (The culmination of that Allegro non molto is so agitating, and so exhilarating, that I played that movement three or four times in a row before I could bring myself to move on to the rest of the disc.) But when Vivaldi calls for lyrical sweetness, Manze is as delicate as can be, such as in the Concerto No. 7's dolorous Largo. The sound is close and true-to-life, and the resulting recording is a must-hear. [8/17/2004] (Anastasia Tsioulcas, ClassicsToday.com)

By the time Philip Glass wrote the music on this CD; Music for Voices in 1970, and Another Look at Harmony, Part 4 in 1970-1975, he had already established his voice as one of the main architects of the minimalist music movement. Though he disparages the term, minimalist, he has accepted the classification, but with the distinction that it only applies only to his earliest pieces, those up to and including Music in Twelve Parts.

Martha Argerich - Music for Two Pianos (2008)
EAC Rip | Classical | 2 CD | FLAC + CUE + Log | Covers | 563 mb | TT 02:26:19
Released: September 16, 2008 | Label: EMI Classics
Martha Argerich, Mirabela Dina, Gabriela Montero
Lilya Zilberstein, Polina Leschenko, et al.
This immensely entertaining collection of works for two pianos featuring the inimitable Martha Argerich and friends is a composite recording of works from the Lugano Festivals of 2003 - 2006, and while many collectors may have the annual recordings from these festivals, this particular emphasis on works for two pianos alone is worth adding this affordable CD to the collection.
Not all of the works on this powerful CD (live performances all!) were written for two pianos: the Tchaikovsky Suite from 'The Nutcracker' is a transcription as is the Prokofiev Classical Symphony. For this listener it matters not a bit. In fact the transcription of the Prokofiev Symphony No. 1 by Rikuya Terashima as performed by both Argerich and Yefim Bronfman is for this listener one of the highlights of the album. All of Prokofiev's humor and biting satire are tossed off by these two artists with ease. It is dazzlingly well played! There are a few rarities to enjoy here - the Rachmaninov 'Six Morceaux' for piano four hands (which ends with a tribute to Mussorgsky) and Suite No. 2 for two pianos (with Gabriela Montero) are far too seldom heard.
The Brahms Sonata in F minor for two pianos is monumental and played with passion and precision as is the shorter 'Variations of a them by Haydn: Lilya Zilberstein joins Argerich on the former and Polina Leshenko on the latter. Ending the two disc set is another rarity - Lutoslawski's 'Variations on a theme by Paganini' for two pianos (Giorgio Tomassi seconds here). Though the work is a brief 5 minutes it holds much of the almost orchestral-like coloration of the master's major works.
For those who remain under the spell of Martha Argerich this recording is a treasure. Be aware that the applause from the live audience is recorded also... -- Amazon customer

The combination of Rudolf Serkin and Frédéric Chopin may come as a surprise to collectors, yet this pianist actually cultivated a repertoire wider than the central Austrian/German classics upon which his reputation rests. Sony's booklet notes state that Serkin had "good reason" not to sanction the release of his 1976 recording of Chopin's Op. 28 Preludes. If so, I can't fathom what that reason was, save perhaps for one or two inconsequential smudges. Serkin's forceful, unvarnished, and angular interpretation often recalls Arthur Rubinstein's similarly conceived (if more carelessly detailed) recording from the 1940s.
Like many pianists of his generation, Serkin was not averse to breaking the hands for melodic emphasis and textural variety, as you readily hear in the simpler, lyrical movements. At the same time, Serkin eschews many "traditional" rubatos and phrasing conventions, such as the unwritten ritard most pianists impose upon No. 17's introductory measures. By playing No. 18 in tempo with little rubato and no melodrama, the unison octave outbursts make an unusually blazing impact. By contrast, Serkin shares Arrau and Barenboim's unconventionally deliberate view of No. 14, stressing Chopin's pesante expressive direction rather than his Vivace tempo marking. Some listeners may want more lightness and delicacy in No. 3's flickering left-hand runs, although the power and clarity in Nos. 8, 16, 19, and 24 remind us how Serkin could still rise to and vanquish virtuosic challenges in his later years.
The Mendelssohn Prelude and Fugue derives from the same sessions and finds Serkin on peak form. The Prelude's arpeggiated textures roll and crest like torrential waves, while Serkin's unrelenting drive and long-lined concentration in the Fugue leave the listener limp and exhilarated. In all, this is a release no Rudolf Serkin enthusiast will want to miss.

Cavalli: Artemisia

Easy CD-DA | FLAC, CUE, No Log | Booklet | 630 Mb
3 CD | Date CD: April 2011 | Glossa
CD 1
Although Cavalli has been known as a composer of Venetian seicento sacred music, it is his prolific contribution in the field of opera – where he became one of the leading figures involved in the development of commercial opera companies from the 1640s onwards – that has been receiving greater attention from artists in more recent times.
And it is with a dramma per musica in Artemisia from the mid 1650s, with its tale of love, deceit and honour and the upholding of the virtues of the Venetian Republic (all this richly captured by the expressive style of Cavalli), that Cavina has chosen to contribute to that fresh look at Cavalli’s music on this new recording from Glossa.

Red Priest: Nightmare in Venice

Those crazy Red Priest guys have done it again, making a wonderfully fun and playful disc of thrash-baroque. This small group really tears up the score. I can imagine that Red Priest would be a riot to see live.
I haven't heard any of the pieces played by a 'straight' ensemble, so I can't comment, but I highly suspect these guys of taking some outrageous liberties. But you have to go with the flow here to get your reward from this romp.
