Hélène Grimaud: Chopin & Rachmaninov

EAC | FLAC + CUE | Covers | 303 Mb
Date CD: March 8, 2005 | Deutsche Grammophon | 61:54

Hélène Grimaud's releases on DG have each been built around a "concept." Here, it's death and transcendence. The philosophically bent can get Grimaud's explanation in the booklet notes, while the musical among us can just listen to a stimulating program of standard repertory freshened by one of today's outstanding younger pianists. In the Chopin Sonata, Grimaud's volatile first movement and delicately colorful finale provide the tone and resolution required by both composer and her own philosophical outlook. The latter, though, means a dry-eyed Funeral March shorn of any trace of sentimentality yet not lacking power, more a contemplation of mourning rather than the thing itself. The Rachmaninov Sonata is his 1931 revision with Grimaud's restoration of sections of the 1913 original. As in the Chopin, Grimaud's gorgeous tone and the clarity of her articulation help make this an outstanding performance. The program closes with a pair of Chopin's most affecting works, the Berceuse and the Barcarolle, both beautifully played. --Dan Davis

tracklist:

Chopin - Piano Sonata No.2 in B flat minor, Op.35
Rachmaninov - Piano Sonata No.2 in B flat minor, Op.36

La Monarcha (Spanish 17th century music)

A new and innovative concept by Erik Bosgraaf and his friends: dance music from the Spanish territories in the 17th century, by famous and anonymous composers, constantly crossing the borders between the serious and the playful, between art music and light music. Listening to this wonderful program, played with such obvious fun, zest and drive, one feels that music has this eternal quality of uplifting one's soul, spirit and body, whether written 400 years ago or right at this moment. Erik Bosgraaf, Izhar Elias and Alessandro Pianu play on original instruments or copies thereof. Their earlier releases on Brilliant Classics have gained international praise for their originality and dedication, resulting in important prizes such as the Prize from the Borletti Buitoni Trust. This collection draws directly from the works of Italian and Spanish guitarists Girolamo Montesardo, Carlo Calvi, Gaspar Sanz, Santiago de Murcia and Francesco Corbetta, keyboard players Antonio de Cabezón, Bernardo Storace, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Pieter de Vois, and authors of solo and chamber music for a variety of other instruments, Andrea Falconieri, Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde and Jacob van Eyck. Emblem and ambassador of Spanish culture, it is the guitar that threads the story together, intrinsically intertwined with the Spanish fondness for variation sets on harmonic grounds. Spain's imperial history explains the wide geographical variety of composers, though even the Dutch Sweelinck seeks to bring local colour to his sober Low Countries aesthetic in his Pavana Hispanica. Elsewhere there are variations on the perennially popular La Follia , jolly Correntes and tarantellas, and more sinuous diferencias and intabulations of love-songs. They are all performed by a trio of young and talented musicians who bring great rhythmic vitality and a freshly imaginative approach to this inventive act of reconstruction.

Tchaikovsky: Selections from Nutcracker

EAC | APE + CUE | Covers | 308 Mb
Date CD: September 25, 2007 | Telarc | 73:02

As popular performers of classical music's greatest hits, it seems strange that Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops had not recorded Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker until 2007. The recording is subtitled "Favorite Selections," implying that it's more than just the suite (parts of which they have done on Tchaikovsky and ballet samplers), but less than the full ballet. Actually, all that's missing here is the "Grandfather's Dance" and the "Battle and Transformation" scene, which then begs the question of why not stretch the recording another 10 minutes to fit these in? Regardless, it really is a treat to hear more than just the suite since there are parts that are just as great as what's in the suite and are heard all too infrequently, such as the "Pas de deux Coda" and the "Final Waltz." The "Waltz of the Snowflakes" is another one of those, and here it's done with appropriate feathery lightness by the orchestra and the Cincinnati Children's Choir, which has excellent intonation, tone, and ensemble work. The waltz has its dramatic moments, but like all the dramatic moments in the score, Kunzel keeps it exciting and grand without being overly intense. The whole performance has a constancy and consistency of delivery that give the impression of childlike wonder and magic, but isn't at all too sugary. Similarly, the dancing momentum is maintained without being too athletic or too indulgent, as in the case of the "Arabian Dance." Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have come through with a truly reliable and enjoyable performance of the Nutcracker, presented in Telarc's well-known deep sound quality.

Brindley Sherratt (bass), Gail Pearson (soprano),
Early Opera Company (on period instruments), Christian Curnyn (conductor)

'Chandos’s new entrant is the first early-instrument Semele to be recorded absolutely complete… Thanks no doubt to stage experience as Semele, Rosemary Joshua brings irresistible unforced charm to her every scene. There is character in even the smallest phrases…Chandos provides clear, natural sound.' (International Record Review)

'Christian Curnyn understands the unique tinta of this gorgeous score, and directs his spruce period band with a nice blend of nonchalant elegance and dramatic energy. Tempi are shrewdly judged, rhythms light and supple, and recitatives tumble inevitably into arias…. As at the English National opera, rosemary Joshua, radiant of tone, dazzling coloratura, makes Semele far more than an over-sexed airhead… this becomes a clear fist choice for an ever enticing work.' (Gramophone)

'In the title role, soprano Rosemary Joshua applies light and graceful tone and conveys Smemle’s willful, pleasure-seeking nature. As her immortal lover Jupiter, tenor Richard Croft is equally lucid and nimble.' (BBC Music Magazine)

'It is superbly sung by the tenor Robert Croft, easily the most sensuous of all recorded Jupiters, while Rosemary Joshua is captivating as Semele – her diamaninte tone and dazzling coloratura technique making nimble work of her gorgeous arias… A must for Handelians, and anyone who doesn’t know one of his most life-enhancing masterpieces.' (The Sunday Times)

'With Rosemary Joshua’s enchantingly ditzy heroine, Richard Croft’s romantic Jupiter and Hilary Summers as Ino/Juno, this is the most complete and idiomatically sung account on disc of Handel’s closet English Opera' (Sunday Times ‘Disc of the Year 2007’)

'Rosemary Joshua has established herself as one of the foremost interpreters of the role of Semele, the charming, dizzy-headed mortal who falls in love with the king of the gods. She excels at the fearsome coloratura, the warm lyricism, and the sheer fizz of the role. All this comes across in conductor Christian Curnyn’s recording, and there‘s some beautiful support from Richard Croft as Jupiter and counter tenor Stephen Wallce as Semele’s financé Athamus' (Classic FM)

'An obligatory set for Handelians' (Goldberg 50)

'…this new recording becomes the prime recommendation for Handel’s hedonistic masterpiece.' (Telegraph Classical CD of the Week)

Sweelinck: Psaumes francais and Canciones Sacrae

EAC | FLAC, CUE | 61:33 | 347 MB
Harmonia Mundi |Nov 10, 2009 | Cover

Depositfiles - - Turbobit - - Filefactory

Composer, organist, organ builder and teacher of international renown, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was known in his own time as the ‘Orpheus of Amsterdam'. Among his significant contributions to Franco-Flemish polyphony, one finds both psalms in French which closely follow the dictates of the Reformation and sacred vocal works in Latin, among which the Magnificat is outstanding.
The program is divided evenly between Calvinist psalms in French and Catholic motets in Latin. The former were polyphonic elaborations of Louis Bourgeois’ tunes for the Genevan metrical psalms of Marot and de Bèze. The French translations were already familiar, since the settings of Goudimel and Lejeune were known in Amsterdam, while the Dutch translations made poor poetry and hence were not favored for singing. Six of these psalms are sung here, mingled with four Latin motets (only one of them a psalm) published in Antwerp in 1619. We hear groups of psalms, then cantiones, then more psalms, concluding with a Te Deum, the longest work on the program.
The annotator suggests that, after Sweelinck converted to Calvinism, he had no hard feelings toward his former faith. This program shows how sensitively he could set the Latin texts, for the penitential De profundis and the ecstatic Magnificat exemplify an awareness of the varied moods, even down to details of text setting. For the French psalms, he respected the Calvinist emphasis on simple text declamation, preserving not only the Bourgeois tunes but also clarity in their polyphonic elaboration. Richard Marlow recorded the complete Cantiones sacrae (23:1), as did Timothy Brown at the same time, but his collection of psalms (16:2) included none of these selections. It would seem that someone might record the complete psalms, published in four books between 1604 and 1621 (the last posthumously). Would it fill as many as a dozen CDs?
Reuss, who is better known on this label with the RIAS Kammerchor, has spent much more time with the present ensemble than in Berlin, nearly two decades during which this ensemble, already two decades old, achieved professional status. Its 18 members demonstrate fine ensemble and tonal suavity. The choice of works offers a broad perspective on the composer’s choral music, still less familiar on records than his keyboard music. As a sampler, then, this is an excellent start toward familiarity with the “Orpheus of Amsterdam.”

Fantastic recording of Wagner's final music drama. Emphasis is on the orchestra but the cast is first rate too. The atmosphere is full of mystery. The performance of the orchestra is haunting. Karajan's conducting is spellbounding! Much of the beauty of Wagner's score blooms under Karajan's baton. The music suits perfectly Karajan's unique sound. One of the best Wagner recordings ever!!!

Oboe and guitar—is there even a repertoire? When Almute Zwiener and Kathrin Redlich were asked to play a concert in this unusual combination in 2003, they started digging. They soon located the few existing original compositions by Napoleon Coste, Karl Pilss, and Tom Eastwood. But their research also showed that up to and including the nineteenth century it was common pract ice to adapt music for such combinations. In addition, it was an obvious choice to play on period instruments, since both musicians had already mastered the entire range of instruments from the baroque period to the twenty-first century. From these beginnings, a remarkable and unique ensemble was founded that convinced the jury at the eleventh ‘Alte Musik Treff des Berliner Musikinstrumentenmuseums’ (Early Music meeting of the Berlin Museum of Musical Instruments) in 2006 and won a prize. Duo Varino creates programs from the baroque and classical periods in the spirit of the times, but also plays original compositions from more recent centuries and from the present. This is the ensemble’s first CD.

I'm resurrecting here some of the works that "disappeared" from Avax or were "abandoned" from the original uploaders. There's not a real project behind it, I'm just cleaning up my HDs and following the tide. What I downloaded long ago is flowing back. All credits go to the first uploader. Enjoy...

Handel: Messiah

Easy CD-DA | FLAC, CUE, No Log | Covers | 658 Mb
October 25, 1990 | Archiv Produktion

This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A joyous performance, just right for the holiday season.

Maybe the situation is quieter now...

One of Italy’s greatest composers between Monteverdi and Vivaldi, Agostino Steffani (1654–1728), is the unsung master of early Baroque opera. As an Italian who spent most of his life in Germany, he has been largely ignored by musicologists from both countries, so his music has fallen between the cracks of history. Yet his contribution to the development of opera can be compared to that of Lully in France or Purcell in England, and his fluent synthesis of the then-rival Italian, German and French styles paved the way for the cosmopolitan new musical language of Handel, Bach and Telemann.
But besides being a busy composer and court musician, Steffani was many other things as well: a high-ranking cleric, jet-setting diplomat, art collector, linguist, dynastic matchmaker, international peacemaker and probably spy. Personally involved in many of the major political upheavals and scandals of his day – often pointedly reflecting them in the plots of his operas.
Autumn 2012 marks the release of Mission, a sensational new album from the world’s best-selling classical artist, Cecilia Bartoli, and a project with international politics, religious conflict, diplomatic secrecy, spying and sensational music at its heart.
The album showcases the music of a little-known Italian composer and will include solo arias of various moods and styles, several duets, solo numbers with chorus – all sung in Italian – and instrumental interludes that create an organic transition from one piece to the next and an arc that reaches from the beginning to the end of the album.
Among the distinguished names appearing on Mission is star French counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky who features in a first-time collaboration with Cecilia on a selection of duets, alongside the Coro della Radiotelevisione Svizzera, the period orchestra I Barocchisti from Lugano, Switzerland, and conductor Diego Fasolis.
A cinematographic vision of the album directed by Olivier Simonnet and filmed in the historic Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) and in the gardens of the Chateau de Versailles will be available on DVD later in the year.
