Charpentier's Pastorale is basically an elaborate French baroque Christmas pageant (and that's not a criticism) depicting the shepherds' vision of the angel and their pilgrimage to the manger in Bethlehem. It has some particularly charming examples of the pastoral music so beloved of French Baroque composers (for recorders, finger cymbals, and the like) and a gorgeous scene with Agnès Mellon leading the band of angels singing praises to God. "In nativitatem DNJC canticum" sets various verses of a Latin hymn of praise to a beguiling triple-time tune. As for the performance, it's a fine example of why, for twenty years, there have been no more persuasive interpreters of Charpentier than William Christie and Les Arts Florissants.

CD 3 of 5: Les arts florissants
Booklet (1 file for all the volumes)
Les arts florissants (H. 487) is a short chamber opera (also described by the composer as idylle en musique) in five scenes by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. It was written in 1685 for the group of musicians employed by Marie de Lorraine, Duchess of Guise, at her residence in Paris. The reason behind the creation of this work, as well as its place of performance, remain a matter for speculation. The French libretto, written by an unknown author, is allegorical in nature and draws on aspects of mythological and natural symbolism familiar to 17th-century audiences to add depth to a superficially simple plot.

While the majority of renowned French composers during the late 17th century spent most of their time at Versailles, Marc Antoine Charpentier spent most of his holding various appointments throughout Paris, including one at the Jesuit church of St. Louis. On this recording director Olivier Schneebeli offers a mostly solemn yet often moving Vesper service that's constructed to resemble one that Charpentier might have created for the order (a typical setting from the period nearly always was assembled using music both by the composer and his contemporaries). Unlike Michel Corboz, who employs a full period orchestra in a similar Jesuit reconstruction (Cascavelle), Schneebeli uses only two viola de gambas, theorbe, bassoon, and organ for instrumental support.

Recordings of Charpentier's Te Deum, with its celebrated opening Prelude are relatively plentiful, with versions by Michel Corboz, Louis Devos (both Erato/RCA) and Malgoire (now advised for release on CBS) among those currently in the European catalogue. Much less favoured by recording companies, however, is the beautiful Mass, Assumpta est Maria which William Christie includes in this new release together with the most extended of Charpentier's nine settings of the Litanies de la Vierge. So many of Charpentier's strengths as a composer of sacred vbcal music are evident in these works that we might almost regard it as a culmination of all that Christie has so far explored, but I very much hope that this is not a final gesture either on his part or that of Harmonia Mundi who, more than any other recording company, have rehabilitated the composer in the ears and eyes of the public.

I'm beginning here to resurrect some of the works that "disappeared" from Avax or were "abandoned" from the original uploaders. There's not a real thought behind it, I'm just cleaning up my HDs and following the wind. What I downloaded long ago is flowing back. All credits go to the first uploader. Enjoy...

Thanks for the generous share again. However, I've been trying for the umteenth time to download from Turbobit, but to no avail. It just seldomly works. Btw the same goes for Filevelocity (see some other shares). The word 'velocity' gets an entire new meaning :). I strongly suggest to use working hosts like Depositfile and Rapidshare. RS free is slow, but at least it works. Uploaded is very unstable and Filepost just deletes files whenever it suits their fancy. Thanks again for the good work, but maybe it's better to use working hosts to avoid a lot of frustration.

Thank you very much for this share. With some difficulties, I managed to download the booklet and the first four CDs using uploaded.to, except the 5th CD, I abandoned after trying 20 times without success; turbobit did not work for any of the 6 links.
