Matthias Weckman: Abendmusiken

For its first collaboration with Zig-Zag Territoires, the ensemble Les Cyclopes, which includes among others the promising young singers Eugénie Warnier, Damien Guillon, Robert Getchell and Benoît Arnould, presents a musical portrait of the composer Matthias Weckmann, who was born in Thuringia in 1616 and died in Hamburg in 1674.
This programme consisting of three cantatas, two sonatas, a harpsichord suite and the chorale ‘Komm, heiliger Geist’ played on the organ of St Ludger’s Church, Norden, aims to illustrate the different facets of his output, the fruit of his eclectic training and the atmosphere of intellectual ferment and philosophical openmindedness that reigned in seventeenth-century Hamburg.

Venetian Vespers [McCreesh]

Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort and Players have become famous for their recreations of the great liturgical set pieces of the Venetian 16th and early 17th centuries. These recordings made by Deutsche Grammophon in the 1990s are state of the art and were critically acclaimed. In this 5Cd set we are taken back to St Mark’s Basilica, the most important church in the city-state, and the Confraternity of San Rocco, for which Giovanni Gabrieli and his colleague the falsetto Bartolemeo Barbarino composed remarkable collection of instrumental and vocal music. This recording includes wide range of Gabrieli’s work, from intimate motets, to the reconstructed glory of the 33 part Magnificat On CDs 1 and 2 we are in St Mark’s at Easter time in 1600. The smell of incense hangs in the chill air of the basilica and the huge building resonates with sound of voices – the service has begun. The central work is the Missa Congratulamini mihi by Lassus. As was customary, the Credo has been omitted, and substituted with non-liturgical vocal works by composers such as Giovanni and Alessandro Gabrieli, Bendinelli, and Merulo. Organ toccatas, Sacrae symphonea and other vocal works are placed between the movements of the Mass. The Venetian Vespers on CDs 3 and 4 again draws on music from a variety of composers as services such as the vespers at this time were often made up of movements of Mass and Vespers settings by different composers. The composer of the most famous setting of the Vespers, Claudio Monteverdi features here with his Messa et salmi, alongside Banchieri, Cavalli, and Giovanni Gabrieli.
Gramophone reviewing Music for San Rocco said ‘It is hard to imagine this fine recording of Gabrieli’s music being superseded for some time to come. For the sheer splendour of the music, and the excellence of the performances, this recording is a must, a real five-star achievement’. January 1997
Venetian Vespers Gramophone review ‘Among the performers there is a feeling of common enterprise that is hard to describe, but which sets this record apart from so many others where the overall impression is of a sequence of unrelated pieces given a disjointed series of separate performances…. There is some carefully thought out and gracefully shaped instrumental playing…. In short this is an heroic achievement of the highest possible order’. June 1993
Venetian Easter Mass, Gramophone review. ‘The impact is tremendous in some items…as usual, the singing and playing are of a high order..’ July 1997

What a recording! The engagement of each participant is absolute; they take pleasure in rendering this music, in all of its facets. The proofs are too numerous to list them all here; let's just take a few examples: the voice of Pilar Figueras, as charming as the one of her sister (Ludus de Passione), the inimitable verve of René Zosso (Officium lusorum), the recorder played with skill by René Clemencic (everywhere). Above all, the pieces grouping the whole ensemble (In taberna quando sumus, Bacche bene venies) are full of life and imagination. Sometimes the voices are bad, but that's part of the game! For people looking for emotions, of all kinds.
(comment from Medieval.org)

The courageous and scholarly reconstruction of the traditional Carmina Burana ("Lyrics from Benediktbeuren") by Dr René Clemencic and his group of singers and instrumentalists presents a spirited and lively picture of student (and clerical) life between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. It includes exuberant songs of eating and drinking as well as songs of tender freshness telling of springtime and love. The "Dicers' Mass" (Officium Lusorum) parodies many well known Gregorian chants. Its satire would only come naturally to those who knew their service-books backwards and whose lives were largely taken up with the work of preparing and singing the liturgy. For this reason this 'mass' has an astonishing dimension of sheer familiarity.
(Review from Grammophone.net)

This performance features Hans Breitschopf (countertenor), René Clemencic (recorders, flute, cornet, shepherd's flute, organ), Richard Erig (shawm, bombarde), Andràs Kécskès (lute, rubebe, psaltery), Pedro Liendo (baritone), Anne Osnowycz (buche), Frantisek Pik (cornet, courbe, mandolin), Spiros Rantos (vielles, rabab), Walter Schiefer (percussion), Zeger Vandersteene (countertenor, percussion), and René Zosso (hurdy-gurdy, chant).

According to director Clemencic, this is not intended to be a definitive version of the Carmina Burana, but rather a faithful rendering of the text received. It is fun, lively, and full of spirit. Originally recorded for vinyl in 1974, the transfer to disc has been expertly achieved.

Beethoven and his Teachers

EAC Rip | FLAC + cue + log | 2 CD | Scans | 400 MB
2011 | Genre: Classical | Label: Naxos | TT 92:13

Depositfiles - - Filefactory - - Turbobit

This recording by Cullan Bryant and Dmitry Rachmanov gives fans of piano duet music the chance to hear a couple of rarities, plus Beethoven's duets on period instruments.
Beethoven and His Teachers mixes the works of Beethoven with pieces by three men known to have taught the great master at some point. Christian Gottlob Neefe was an organist and opera conductor mostly known for being Beethoven's first significant composition teacher, but he also made piano arrangements of and prepared vocal-piano scores for Mozart's opera music. His Six Easy Pieces from Die Zauberflöte are quite charming and capture several of the most famous melodies. Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, a friend of the Haydns, taught Beethoven harmony and counterpoint. Albrechtsberger's Prelude and Fugue is a Classical-era take on the Baroque form, but it still uses a few of the ornamental and fantasia traits of the earlier period. Haydn's Il Maestro e lo Scolare, well-known to duet students, but rarely recorded, is performed by Bryant and Rachmanov quite winningly, both acting as equal partners in agreeable imitation throughout the variations. Among the highlights of Beethoven's duets are the duo's reading of the Waldstein Variations, WoO 67, and the Variations on Ich denke dein, WoO 74, for which they are joined by Maria Ferrante, who sings the theme of the work. The inclusion of Beethoven's own transcription of the Grosse Fuge is of interest because of the use of the historical instrument, but, even as well as Bryant and Rachmanov play it, it doesn't quite live up to the effectiveness of the string quartet version. Overall, however, this recording is a great choice for those looking for original instrument performances of this repertoire.

"Ariadne auf Naxos (Ariadne on Naxos) is an opera by Richard Strauss with a German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal." -- Wikipedia

Gueden is one of the main assets of the 1954 Ariadne, singing Zerbinetta with as much accuracy and a fuller tone than most of her rivals on CD in an attractively insouciant interpretation. As for Karajan (EMI, 4/88) a year or two later and for Bohm in 1944, Seefried is as winning a Composer as any. Schock, also Karajan's Bacchus, is equal to the stringent demands of the part and sings it with panache. Della Casa's Ariadne has inborn grace and musicality. -- Alan Blyth, Gramophone [11/1994]

Jordi Savall: The Celtic Viol

EAC Rip | APE + cue + log | Covers
2009 | Alia Vox | 397 Mb

The indefatigable and versatile Jordi Savall has long included folk music in his various historical recording projects. Here he turns to Celtic traditions, specifically instrumental dance music for the fiddle.

In his eloquent preface to the substantial notes which come with the disc, he explains how he encountered this music live during 1977 at a festival in Kilkenny, Ireland. As in many Irish town festivals during Summer he encountered musicians playing fiddles, flutes and penny whistles in the pubs, streets and squares. This led to research on the existing written sources of music which is normally acquired by ear from generation to generation. In the mainly C17th books by Irish and Scottish compilers, he found, notated as single melodic lines, an immensely rich resource of jigs, strathspeys, hornpipes, laments, reels and other forms. Accompaniments were improvised on the spot, as they are today, and thus not usually notated.

Joseph Martin Kraus: Miserere, Requiem, Stella Coeli

EAC Rip | FLAC, CUE, LOG | Covers | 1 cd, 261 MB
Classical | Cpo Records CN 777 409-2 | TT 61'

The small German label CPO has made a specialty out of unearthing buried treasures. Thanks to the gorgeous work of five soloists, period-instrument orchestra La Stagione Frankfurt and the Deutscher Kammerchor under conductor Michael Schneider, three sacred pieces by Joseph Martin Kraus glow with colour and life. A contemporary of Mozart's, Kraus (1756-1792) wrote in a similar style yet shows his own, slightly more Baroque-influenced style of invention. Kraus spent years composing for the Swedish court in Stockholm, but his ears and eyes were open to the latest musical developments in the rest of Europe. The nearly 30-minute Miserere is the finest of all, full of musical motifs that carry all the way through. Any of these pieces deserve your ears if you like Mozart and Haydn. Better yet, it would be great to hear them performed live in Toronto. -- Toronto Star, John Terauds, January 2010

I'm resurrecting here some of the works that "disappeared" from Avax or were "abandoned" from the original uploaders. There's not a real project behind it, I'm just cleaning up my HDs and following the tide. What I downloaded long ago is flowing back. All credits go to the first uploader. Enjoy...

Philip Glass - Dracula (Michael Riesman)

Easy CD-DA | FLAC tracks | Covers | 257 Mb

Riesman is a veteran of Glass' ensemble, and his piano version of the score is probably as effective an arrangement for the instrument as is possible, and it can be fully enjoyed for what it is. The original version has the advantage of a broader color palette, and in particular, the expressive possibilities for string vibrato, critical in a work this melodramatic, and the power that comes from notes sustaining without any decay.
