The instrument was distinguished by its wide compass, its use of sympathetic strings (not bowed but allowed to resonate), and the fact that it lent itself to playing the lyra way (as with the bass viola da gamba), facilitating the use of multiple stopping and contrapuntal textures. Vivaldi was obviously no less attracted by it; six concertos are a lot for such an unusual instrument, and it is fair to say that they represent some of the most beguiling music he wrote. I make no apology for using the word once more, to describe these performances by Catherine Mackintosh and the OAE.

Concerto in D minor RV 395
Concerto in D minor RV 393
Concerto in A minor RV 397
Concerto in D minor RV 394

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

I'm beginning here to resurrect some of the works that "disappeared" from Avax or were "abandoned" from the original uploaders. There's not a real thought behind it, I'm just cleaning up my HDs and following the wind. What I downloaded long ago is flowing back. All credits go to the first uploader. Enjoy...
