Thank goodness this opera set has been returned to the catalogue. It is one of the finest versions of this work ever recorded. Speeds are spacious, the recorded sound is warm and much of the singing is superlative. Carol Vaness as Fiordiligi is as remarkable a performance as her Donna Anna on Haitink's Don Giovanni. It's not likely you will hear many better traversals of the role. The power and artistry she brings to Come Scoglio has seldom been matched on disc. Altogether the cast is less starry than other versions but with John Aler's headily beautiful tenor tone as Ferrando and Claudio Desderi's nutty toned Alfonso, the voice never far away from a chuckle, they stand comparison with the best interpreters of their respective roles. The other three principals are well integated into the overall performance. This is a very good performance that won't disappoint.
